Podczas konferencji QuakeCon w Dallas w minionym tygodniu, AMD zaprezentowało pierwszy komputer z kartą graficzną nowej generacji, znaną do tej pory pod kodową nazwą Evergreen. Evergreen to tak naprawdę cała rodzina kart graficznych, którą będzie składać się prawdopodobnie 5 lub 6 modeli, a które jako pierwsze w pełni będą zgodne ze specyfikacją DirectX 11. Wspomniany DX11 zadebiutuje 22 października wraz z premierą Windows 7, ale AMD swoje karty zaprezentuje prawdopodobnie już 10 września (tak przynajmniej głosi zapowiedź widoczna na obrazku obok). Ciekawą rzeczą jest również fakt, że układy Evergreen do dzisiaj owiane są wielką tajemnicą. Pierwsze wzmianki pojawiły się podczas targów Computex, od tamtego czasu wiemy, że GPU będzie produkowany w wymiarze 40 nm, obsługuje DirectX 11 i zajmuje około 180 mm2 powierzchni (kodowa nazwa Juniper), znacznie mniej niż RV770 (260 mm2). Pojawiły się również plotki na temat układu o kodowej nazwie Cypress, który zajmuje powierchnie 350 mm2, ale nie podano żadnych bliższych informacji. Korzystnie powinno wpłynąć to na cenę, pytanie tylko czy tak mały układ będzie znacznie wydajniejszy niż poprzednia generacja? Miejmy nadzieje, że wszystkiego dowiemy się już za niespełna miesiąc. NVIDIA swój układ z obsługą DirectX 11 (GT300) planuje na koniec 2009 roku, jednak bardziej prawdopodobną datą jest 1. kwartał 2010.

ATI Evergreen - znamy ceny, zapowiada się ciekawie

Wygląda na to, że mamy już kluczowe informacje na temat nowych kart ATI, które znane są bardziej jako Evergreen. W sieci zaczęły pojawiać się domniemane ceny nowych modeli oraz informacje na temat wydajności poszczególnych kart. Topowa konstrukcja znana pod nazwą Hemlock to dwa układy Cypress zamontowane na jednym PCB, które w sumie zaoferują nam 3200 jednostek SP w cenie 599 USD (prawdopodobnie rynkowa nazwa to Radeon HD 5800 X2). Trzeba przyznać w dosyć wysokiej cenie, ale trzeba pamiętać, że GTX 280 w dniu premiery kosztował 649 USD. Cypress (Radeon HD 5870), czyli jednochipowa karta wyposażona w 1600 jednostek SP będzie dostępna w cenie 379-399 USD i zaoferuje wydajność na poziomie modelu GTX 295, wyposażonego w dwa układy GT200. Model Juniper (Radeon HD 5850) posiadający 800 jednostek SP będzie kosztował 279-299 USD i powinien być nieco wydajniejszy niż model HD 4870, a przy tym wyraźnie od niego tańszy. Nie można również zapomnieć, że wszystkie wspomniane układy produkowane są w wymiarze technologicznym 40 nm, który dobrze rokuje w kwestii podkręcania. Ponadto według komentarzy, TSMC już opanowało proces produkcji w tym wymiarze i odsetek sprawnych układów uzyskiwanych z jednego krzemowego wafla jest naprawdę wysoki co stwarza możliwość redukcji cen w przyszłości. Ta z pewnością nastąpi gdy NVIDIA zdecyduje się na prezentacje swoich kart bazujących na układzie GT300. Redaktorzy serwisu Bright Side of News zauważyli także ciekawą prawidłowość, NVIDIA brylowała w czasach DirectX 8 (GeForce 3) i DirectX 10 (GeForce 8800), podczas gdy ATI święciło tryumfy przy DirectX 9 (Radeon 9700/R300) i zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie w przypadku DirectX 11. The chip maker has officially announced this week its new Radeon HD 58xx series of desktop graphics cards, with the introduction of the Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850 models. However, the company is expected to up the ante with a new card, boasting a dual-GPU configuration and slated for a November release, the Radeon HD 5870 X2. Apparently, AMD couldn't keep said card a secret no more, having recently showcased the card in all its beauty. Although all the technical specifications and details are yet to be unveiled, the card looks like it's ready for launch. Codenamed Hemlock, the upcoming solution is designed out of two 40nm Cypress GPUs and offers support for DirectX 11 API and ATI's CrossFire technology.

According to available details, the card will require two PCI power connectors with one 6-pin and another 8-pin, which will deliver the necessary power to get the card started. Featuring 2x256-bit memory interface and an impressive number of 3200 Stream processors, this behemoth will be one of the main choices for computer and overclocking enthusiasts, providing them with what AMD will likely call 'the most powerful graphics card in the world'.

Unfortunately, we have no details on its clock speeds, but it's likely that the new Radeon flagship card will come with lower speeds, compared to the current Radeon HD 5870, due to limitations related to the power and heat specifications.
